The book this season

The Midnight Library

by Matt Haig

Somewhere between life and death there is a library, and its shelves go on forever. Every book is a doorway into a different version of the life Nora Seed could have lived: the choices she didn't make, the paths she didn't take, the people she let go.

Given the rare chance to try those other lives on for size, Nora has to work out what she really wants and which life is truly worth living. Matt Haig turns a simple "what if" into a warm, page-turning story about regret, possibility, and the quiet value of an ordinary life.

The chapters are short and the language is clear, which makes it a great read at B1 to C1. The questions it raises ("What would you change? What would you keep?") are perfect for group discussion in English.

The Club is designed for levels B1 to C1. If you can already read news articles in English without a dictionary, you have the level you need.

How many pages do I read between sessions?

On average 60 to 80 pages a month. The Midnight Library is short and easy to follow, so the pace stays enjoyable rather than a race.

What happens if I miss a session?

Every session is recorded. You receive the video link to catch up at your own pace, and you keep access to the worksheets.

Do I need to buy the book?

Yes, each participant buys their own copy. The Midnight Library is widely available in paperback, ebook and audiobook, so it is easy to order or borrow before the first session in September.

How many people are in each session?

Between 6 and 10 participants. This small-group format means everyone has room to speak and the discussion stays friendly.

Can I join from outside Europe?

Yes. Sessions run at 7:30 PM European time on Zoom. Check the time difference for your own zone before you register.

What will you get with the Live English Book Club?

What book will you learn?

The Thursday Murder Club: Thursday Murder Club, Book 1
by Richard Osman

The Thursday Murder Club: Thursday Murder Club, Book 1 by Richard Osman

The Thursday Murder Club is a crime novel disguised as something cozy. Four retirees in a luxury retirement village, people society typically underestimates or ignores, decide to weaponize their life experience, boredom, and sharp observational skills to solve cold cases. Then a real murder lands in their laps.

What looks like a gentle puzzle quickly exposes a deeper truth: these older adults see more, understand more, and act more decisively than the professionals around them. Osman uses humor and charm as camouflage for a sharper critique of complacency, aging, and the narratives we tell ourselves about usefulness.

Osman lures you in with warmth so that you won’t notice he’s systematically dismantling stereotypes about age, competence, and truth.
