What is the British accent conversation course?

This course lets you learn English with teachers from the UK exclusively. The goal is to recreate the experience of being immersed in Britain from wherever you are. Lessons are live and one on one, held online over Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or by phone, and they focus on building your British English conversation skills: pronunciation, intonation, everyday vocabulary and listening.

What you will work on with British teachers

Learning with British teachers lets you develop several skills at once.

  • Improve your British accent and pronunciation
  • Pick up British expressions and idioms you will hear every day
  • Get more familiar with British culture and the way people communicate
  • Find it easier to understand British people in real conversations
  • Hear teachers from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and learn how the accent varies across the UK and Ireland

How the British English classes work

When you choose British English classes you get a Study Box of resources built around British news and topics, and every lesson is delivered by a teacher based in the UK or Ireland. One session a week works well if you already have a good command of British English and mainly want to maintain your level. To move up a level, two to three conversation lessons a week are recommended. It is also good practice to work with two different teachers so you do not get used to a single British accent.

Choose your accent track

The spoken English course runs three accent tracks plus a track for lower levels. They share the same live, one-on-one format. The difference is the teachers you work with.

  • British accent sound natural in UK English and understand British media and colleagues, with teachers from across the UK and Ireland.
  • American accent develop an American accent and US expressions for work, study or life in the United States.
  • Mixed accents get exposure to a range of accents: American, British, Australian, South African and more.
  • Elementary levels build confidence in spoken English first if you are a beginner.

British accent course FAQ

Can I really learn a British accent online?

Yes. The accent comes from regular listening and speaking with people who have it, not from being in the country. Every lesson is one on one with a native teacher from the UK, so you get constant exposure to the British accent and immediate correction on your pronunciation.

How long does it take to improve my British accent?

It depends on your starting level and how often you practise. Most learners hear a clear difference within a few months of two to three sessions a week. Deeper, more consistent change usually develops over six to twelve months of regular practice.

Who teaches the British English lessons?

Native English teachers based in the UK and Ireland, from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Working with two teachers is recommended so you are not tuned to a single regional accent.

How many lessons a week do I need?

One a week is enough to maintain a good level. To actively improve your accent and move up, two to three lessons a week work best.

Do I need a minimum English level?

You should be at a low intermediate level (around B1) or above, because the course is built around conversation. If you are a beginner, the elementary levels track is a better place to start.

How is this different from the American accent course?

This track uses teachers from the UK and Ireland and British-focused resources. If you want an American accent or a mix of accents, see the American accent course or the mixed accents course instead.

Which accent track should I choose?

Choose British for UK English, American for a US accent, or mixed accents for exposure to a range of English accents. Your teacher will help you decide in your free trial lesson.

Are the lessons one-on-one and online?

Yes. Every lesson is private and runs online on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, or by phone if you prefer.

How much does it cost and is there a free trial?
